Pictures of Paris: #6 Tuileries and Notre Dame

Posted by admin on 11 Aug 2013 / 0 Comment

Hello again,

We are coming up on my last few days in Paris, and the days have gotten less and less hectic as the “must-sees” have been got out of the way. Yesterday was mostly a good, slow walk through the Tuileries gardens, right in front of the Louvre, where people generally lounge about, read, eat by the fountains, watch and feed pigeons and look at flowers.

After another slow walk, and some reading, we made it to Notre Dame on l’Ile de la Cite just in time to go to the top of the tower and watch the sunset go down. It was the best view I’ve seen yet.

Here are the Tuileries - you can see a portion of the Louvre in the background, along with plenty of people milling about a large fountain, surrounded by statues. A high f-stop gave a really wide range of focus for this shot.

The flowers at the garden were just beautiful, and allowed for some slow, calm photography, which has not been the norm when stuffed into rooms with a hundred other people during tours. It was a nice change.

Again, some lovely flowers here. I gave this one room to breath at the top, as the angle kind makes it seem as if the flower is looking up to the heavens.

There were two very large fountains with sculptures outside the Tuileries. Photos with a fast shutter speed freeze the motion of the water nicely, and the sculptures here made for great subjects.

Here is Notre Dame. This was taken at the end of our tour, with just the final rays of light from the already sleeping sun lighting up the grand building. The lighting suggests all kinds of possible meanings for this photo, I think.

Here is the interior, during an organ recital. That meant I was unable to look at the large, round stained glass window at the front of Notre Dame, but the music was lovely, echoing off the ancient stone.

Because of how dark it was in Notre Dame, properly exposed photos were difficult to get, but here, I focused on small candles and the stained glass, giving a lovely, colourful effect with very bright highlights, and very dark shadows.

Finally, the top of the tower! This shot was a few minutes after the sun went down, and right from the top of Notre Dame. Truly the city of light.

There you have my post for today. Tomorrow will be the last one, so check it out if you want to see the end of my trip. Hope you’ve enjoyed the shots!
