Welcome to High Level, Alberta series: #5 Trail Stroll

Posted by admin on 09 Sep 2012 / 0 Comment

Hello again!

Since I have taken several tours around town in search of a shot or two, I thought I would venture just a little farther this time and explore some of the wilderness out here. So I grabbed my stuff and took a ride up to a local trail near a lake just as the sun was going down (tip: as the sun goes down or up is really a good time for photos because the light is not so harsh, but still casts nice shadows).

Here are the results of my little trail adventure. Hope you enjoy.

Although at first this shot seemed kind of a silly one to take because there was nothing all that amazing about it, I really like how it turned out after playing with the shadows and highlights in photoshop and giving it a little more colour. Looks like a painting, somehow.

Here is a great example of why just before sunset is a good time for photos. The angle of the light was low enough to catch these leaves and really make them pop.

I tend to take a lot of pictures of tree canopies. Somehow, they often turn out well. Next time you are on a hike, try looking straight up and take a shot and see what you get.

This little guy snuck up on me as I was setting up my tripod for a sunset shot. Hmmm, what could this little guy be?

Here is that sunset shot I was talking about. I took three shots at different exposure settings to see if I could get the colour of the leaves around the frame in the shot as well. In the end I decided to make it a silhouette shot anyway and really make that sunset burst.

Five points for whoever guessed beaver! Another five for whoever found the name of the previous file gave it away…

Close up shots of bark are often a good shot to try as well. The texture they have can make them very visually interesting.

This was the most obvious “leading line” I saw in the forest the entire time, but still had to take the shot. The way the trunk is twisted looks like a giant got hold of it. Thoughts on how this happened?

So that is the result of my little trail adventure. I would have had some shots of three dogs galloping at me from our of no where, but I was too busy deciding if I should run or climb a tree to escape what I thought was an oncoming feral horde of wolves. Thankfully, they were rather friendly huskies.

Thanks for checking out my shots as always. If you saw anything you really liked, any of these photos can be bought and shipped right to you. Check out my “Products” page for a rundown on prices.

See you next week.
