The days are marching on faster, now. It is nearly time for me to leave Ottawa and friends for my sojourn in the north. That is why on Monday night I thought that it would be fitting to do one last late night photo shoot walking the streets of Ottawa. Long exposure shots, HERE I COME!
Long exposure shots at night is one of my most favourite kinds of photography for lots of reasons: it is calm, experimental, surprising and adventurous but in a more zen-like way than sports or event photography. With this technique, you are free to just stroll about during a perfect summer’s evening and capture whatever interesting light you can find.
There are, of course, a few essential things one must have before endeavouring on such an outing. The most important is a pleasant and steadfast companion. These are useful for several reasons: they make the dark less scary and they help carry equipment while you galavant towards whatever fun spot you think of next. You will also need a fairly steady tripod (that or the cheapest functioning one you could get at blacks), and a camera that can take shots of 5 seconds and longer. A comfy pair of walking shoes never hurt either.
Here are some of the things you can do with just the accoutrements described above.
Yes, there is one major shot missing … the Peace Tower of course!
A good shot of that resplendent clock is a very difficult feat to accomplish, or has been for me, at least. These last two shots are my final attempts. Hope you like them!
