First photo stop on Vancouver Island!

Posted by admin on 27 Mar 2017 / 0 Comment

So, if you don’t know already … I’ve moved!

Gone or the cold, snowy, blustery days of Ottawa (that’s how it is for half the year, anyway. Plus, it’s basically black and white for that period, with some brown of bare branches and maybe some blue sky. Not to be hating, but it gets old), and here are the days of green and rain and the sea!

I’m pretty excited, not only because I’m back in my home province (but srsly Ottawa, thanks for having me. It was a blast), but also for so many new photo possibilities! As you may know, I love nature photography, in addition to urban night photos, light painting, and a whole lot else. But coming to a place as lovely and wild as Vancouver Island (I’ll be living in Nanaimo, by the way), it was inevitable that my first shots would be of nature.

So here’s Milner Gardens – a lovely protected forest and cottage area with some royal history, and great flowers. What’s cool too is that just about all the flowers are some kind of rhododendron, so that makes things pretty easy.

Also, if you want to skip through to my full gallery, click HERE.

Flowers! And bokeh! Also, just discovered how to do live view on my camera's rear screen, so I didn't have to lay down in the dirt to get this shot. Awww, technology.

I just love the ambience of this shot. Used my really wide angle lens, and tweaked the light in post to get details in the shade but not blow out the bright spots.

This is probably my favourite shot from this outing. All the detail in that flower (which is light pink, BTW, but BandW just seemed the right choice here) allows a wide range of greys, along with the black of the dark green leaves.

But it’s not all about flowers. I love backlit leaves. Everywhere I go, I go for a shot like this. Also, I thought they looked like surfboards 🙂

It's also fun to go macro and make something look like something else. I thought this looked like it was under the sea.

Whereas this one I tried to make look like a seaside cliff in England, or something, with a really shallow depth of field and lots of drama by keeping it dark.

And there we are, my first Vancouver Island photo outing complete. Again, if you want to see the full gallery, go HERE.  Otherwise, thanks so much for checking out my work, and feel free to explore other photos on my site, and share the link to Facebook, pin some photos or whatever you like.

See ya lata photo lovers.
