The West Block building currently under construction is the main reason I went out to take night shots. It is covered up in semi-transparent plastic, and, for some reason, lit up at night. I thought it would make for a unique photo, despite the fact that tourists are probably annoyed at finding there is construction happening.

I tried a few different angles, deciding to keep centre block in there so that people know these are photos of west block. Also, night photography can often lend itself to black and white work because you are mainly working with intriguing lighting rather than colours necessarily.

There again, sometimes you are going for colour. With other night shooting excursions I’ve done, I’ve been looking for light that was already there, but now I’m trying to imagine what light I can add to add to the shot. Here, I used this shiny statue at the NAC as a subject, and used a flash to light it up. To my delight and total surprise, it caused a great reflection of the trees in front of the statue.

Here is another way of adding light to add to a photo. I really liked this old tree, and I liked the light from the street in the background, but it needed more, so I used the long shutter to dance around the tree with a pair of lights, and voila, light painting. What do you think of adding this technique to photos?

This is another way I tried out light painting. I thought, ‘How cool would it be to add to an already existing thing by drawing over it with light?’ I hope to get more whimsical with this technique and see what happens.

One of the best things night photography is good for is intriguing landscapes. The lighting is so different from the day, and you often get interesting buildings lit up brighter than the surrounding environment. Here, I used my new wide-angle lens and had my fiancee flash the statue from earlier to add another subject to the photo.
