Hello all you photo faithful,
How is it going? I mean, we all knew last night was going to be all about the green, but I don’t think we figured it would be Aurora green! (yeah, I went there).
Anyway, yours truly jumped in the car last night with my faithful and lovely assistant to photograph some energetic sun radiation. Along with half of the photographers across the world, here is what we got.
It took hours of waiting to finally see some cool, spiralling Northern Lights, but here they are, as best as we could see them before past midnight down at the Nicolls Island lock station.
For anyone unaware of how you photograph these, here is a basic rundown: you need an exposure of about 2-10 seconds, which means you need to put your camera on a tripod. Next, you need your ISO setting fairly high to capture a bunch of light, a wide angle lens and a fairly low f-stop (meaning the pupil of the lens is wide open).
Other tips I have are to find a dark place away from city light, have something in the photo that is interesting other than the sky, and make sure to set your focus to infinity! (meaning the stars should be pretty sharp).
Well, these are what I managed to get last night. I’m thinking of heading out tonight as well, depending on the clouds. I hope others are inspired to try it themselves. It’s very cold, so dress twice as warm as you think you should!
Happy Aurora hunting:)
Really nice Adam! I was hoping to see them here but no such luck. Maybe i should have driven to Burnaby Mtn, oh well!
