Hello all!
Boy do I have lots of photos for you! I went out to photograph the beauty of the newly fallen snow, partly to convince myself that, yes, it is indeed pretty and not cold and evil. Turns out, in the right light, it is amazing! It was pretty darn cold out when I took these pictures (something in the neighbourhood of -27 with windchill), but it was worth it. Tell me if you agree!
“Follow the light!” is what I was thinking. It was bound to be at least slightly warmer with the sun beaming down, right!? Well, somewhat anyway. I like the light coming through here, and the trail leading you towards the sun.
Ahh, a bounty of snow. I like how this pine tree looks like it is either valuing the snow very much, or trying to pierce it to death. Definitely open to interpretation, but I love the sunset light on the orange and yellow needles.
Truth be told, there were plenty of little red berries still clinging to branches, but this one just looks so darn determined to brave the snow!
It seems to me like these frozen twigs are reaching towards the sun for some warmth! I don’t blame them.
I thought it was so cool to see how the snow and ice would cling to the tips of these needles like little snowflakes growing out of them. I really like the colours I could coax out of this image with just a little saturation adjustment as well.
But it’s not all about colour. I really like how this photo turned out in black and white. It really gives off a frosty feeling.
Then again, colour is awesome! One of the reasons why sun down or sun up are such great times to take photos is because the directional light gives a lot of options – you can go for front lighting, side lighting, or, like in this photo, back lighting, which can really bring out some iridescent colour.
See, still plenty of berries left. Sometimes simple compositions are really satisfying, like this one. And you can’t beat a colour combo like red and blue!
Just another frosty pine finger. They are so very determined. And check out the rule of thirds here! Totally placed the subject of the photo in the top right thirds intersection, making for a pleasant shot.
This photo was totally inspired by Firefly, the best show ever cancelled by Fox! Although the quote is from the movie, Serenity. “I am a leaf on the …” snow!
Again, this photo shows what you can do with directional light. The plant is lit by the golden hues of the setting sun, while the snow is in shade, giving it a lovely blue colour and a good colour contrast.
This looks heavy.
This photo actually uses the pine branches to divide the photo and the light in the photo. It also kind of hits three intersection points in the rule of thirds grid.
There it is, proof that, though cold, and often dark, there is a ton of beauty here. So don’t let yourself get depressed and stuck inside. Try and get out when it’s sunny, and see what the snow can give.
